Competency Is Learning By Doing

Senior citizen like me is no exemption for a training on the use of technology. Technology is for everybody. It is for young and old. Since the school is already adopting the modern technology on teaching, it is in need for every school head and teacher to keep themselves abreast of this advanced technology in education particularly in the use of computers and other related media for teaching.

From education, we may proceed to a situation which it could be a million chance of anyone who could possess this valuable gem - a monstrous gem so to speak. This man is an ordinary fisherman who finds this fortune for himself in which he had kept for the reason which he could only say. This is a rarest among the rare opportunities ever.

Back again to education, learning is a never-ending pursuit for knowledge. School children, students are struggling hard to have a better education so that their future would be secured. Teachers are no exemption too. Teaching competency is partially acquired from actual studies and it is enhanced and improved by actual teaching. Since there is advent of modern technology, they have to update themselves too.

Revolution and Evolution: DepEd's ICT for Education Framework

Revolution and Evolution: DepEd's ICT for Education Framework (Day 15)

by Rey Laguda

(This is the 15th day of 50-day journey of DepEd Undersecretary Rey Laguda as being serialized here with his permission, culled from his Facebook account - Blogger/owner)

Technology development has been so rapid, non-linear, disruptive and has brought us beyond our boundaries. It's a real game changer. The Department's foray into technology began even before our term as industry sought to help the education sector. By the time we entered, the biggest focus was on deployment of computer hardware and the creation of laboratories in high schools. Considering there were a lot of proposals from outside and numerous demands from within, we needed to have a guide. We inherited an ICT strategy that needed to be recast in light of the changes that were happening internally and externally. Thus, the ICT for Education Framework was developed.

DepEd ICT Coordinators First Year Anniversary

Making things right and in order is the guiding principle why DepEd ICT Coordinators group page in FB is organized and created. As it maintains its mission, it has at least assisted teachers who were new to computer technology and has resolved some LIS common issues and concerns.

One year ago today DepEd ICT Coordinators group page in FB was created to serve as a help desk option for school information and communications technology (ICT) coordinators on encoding online their respective pupils/students enrollment data profile as directed by the Department of Education (DepEd).

A low profile elementary school head, Gil Camporazo of Balabag Elementary School of the Division of La Carlota took the initiative in creating this FB group page, DepEd ICT Coordinators in which there are 6,273 members as of this writing.  One Hundred Percent (100%) of the geographical regions of the country are represented as evident by their online registration made for the purpose.

DepEd ICT Coordinators page was later changed its status from public to a closed group to control the influx of its membership. Later its membership was extended to teachers, class advisers and even school administrators and school heads.

This group enjoys its existence under the spirit of volunteerism and cooperation among the members.

Resources for Creating School Website

A handy resources are made available for those elementary schools that are planning to have a website for their own school. They all contain an easy steps to create a website in which the prospective school could use. They may select from them as to their comfort and convenient in creating a site.

A website is comparable to a book with different pages (web pages) which may contain a written article (post), an array of pictures (images), and references (links). And it is written by writer/author (blogger) or a guest writer.

A website just like a book has an identified edition [(uniform resource locator (URL)] and is printed by a publisher (web domain).

The book is being distributed by a bookstore, give-aways, or by gift-giving. the website or web site is hosted by a web server via Internet or a private local area network (PLAN).

Books are availabe in libraries and bookstores (URL). They may be borrowed or bought personally. Web site or site is built free and hosted free but with limited space (bandwidth). There are paid webhosting which requires a cheapest fee as low as $1 a month or $19 a year.

Who Are They Who Make DICT-C in Order?

Our FB group gains momentum everyday as every member is so busy and even preoccupied to accomplishing their task as teacher-advisers, ICT coordinators and school heads. Thus, they keep in touch with DepEd ICT Coordinators FB Group to get an update of what's happening or new in Learning Information System (LIS).

How to Readmit Learner No Longer in School

The school is always getting the difficulty to get track of their learners due to irregular attendance or even to the extend of non attendance at all. Learn Information System (LIS) site has a No Longer in School (NLS) facility to take care of those learners.

NLS Button
NLS Button
NLS is a facility in LIS to handle the following situation of the pupils/learners:

1. Transfer of school to other public school or private, going abroad with their parents (transfer in residence)
2. Dropping out due health reasons, truancy, and the like
3. Death
4. Unintentionally moving as NLS by teacher-adviser

However, there are instances that those who were no longer in school have returned to school. And the school has to reenroll or readmit them. Now using the LIS facility, what should the teacher should do?

How To Be Successful System Developer

More than a hundred students on programming undertaken by Sir Gilbor D. Camporazo of Technological Foundation Institute (TFI) had hurdled the defense on the system they developed as a partial requirement of their course completion on programming.

TFI Logo
TFI Logo
They're grouped according to their program system like student's enrollment profile, online store, grading system, among others. Every group was given an hour to deliberate on their feasibility proposal which includes the purpose and objectives, work flow chart, the Ghant Chart, the feasibility matrix, and the feedback from the end-users who tested the system.

The panel of interrogators  was composed of a private businessman, Zandiv Abonado; TFI instructor, Engr. Rea Mae Abriola Aguirre; representative from education, school principal Gil Camporazo (this blogger).  It was moderated by their instructor Sir Camporazo who interpolated on the technical aspect of the presentation and on the process of making the system functions.

Sir Camporazo, the younger described the educative defense as "a showcase of knowledge, skills, and attitude of TFI'ans in the field of System Development. An event to remember and learnings to live forever.

How to Search DepEd ICT Coordinators Page Effectively

It is our purpose to make things in order for we are the DepEd ICT Coordinators, teachers, school heads and we are a part and parcel of LIS work as a responsible, resourceful and reliable referenced persons in authority on the task we are committed to do.

DepEd ICT Coordinator Banner Page
DepEd ICT Coordinators Page Banner
In discharging this kind of job we have had we are no perfect person. We need basic pieces of information to keep ourselves going especially in straightening learner basic data. We want to make it reliable, authentic and accurate. Since we are not perfect we want to complete it. Thus we do some search/query/asking question to give us of what you want and again to satisfy our insufficiency of knowledge or pieces of information we need.

By merely posting a question to the group couldn't guarantee that it could be answered. It may take time to be replied by the admin or any member who is online. Or it may never be answered at all.

LIS Change Request Facility Made Easy

Recently the Learner Information System (LIS) has introduced a Change Request Facility to work on various corrections to the basic learner's profile like his name, age, learner reference number (LRN), among others. With this application everything would be straighten and made accurate especially the learner's school profile records.

LIS corrections facility
To make this corrections request facility, valid, authentic and reliable, it requires two key persons to handle this thing. One is the class adviser who makes a request for correction of learner's profile and the other one is the school head who approves or disapproves the change of requests.

Teacher especially class adviser may find this tutorial very useful and helpful. This correction request facility may rectify erroneous entries on the learner's enrollment profile made by lack of orientation, lack of time, or shall we say miscommunication.

Likewise, the school head may find this tutorial easy for him to approve the request made. In short, this facility is involving two responsible persons in the school for the genuineness, authenticity of the learner's vital records in school.

How To Download School Forms from LIS Simply

Teachers who are encoding their latest enrollment to Learner Information System (LIS) are commonly confronted with difficulty to download a copy of their SF1 () and SF5 due to heavy traffic of teacher-users, weak internet connection or access.

Mam Norelyn Subion Togueno of Palawan
Norelyn
Nevertheless, those forms would be downloaded in due time but you take quite sometime to wait. Anyway, once you download the forms you wanted to have, you will be prompted that "School form has been queued for processing and will be available for download shortly."

"100% Effective... the direction is easy to follow... informative... and user-friendly," told Ms. Norelyn Subion Togueno, a grade one teacher of Sagpangan Elementary School, Division of Palawan after reading and following the steps in this blog.

Mam Norelyn has been a week of working on learner information system of 3 schools which she worked on and found it difficult to download the needed school forms for submission to their district, not counting the inefficient internet connection in their area.

Ubiquitous DepEd LIS Handy Admins

Insurmountable basic problems and technological lapses and internet glitches seem to pile up since the elementary and secondary schools in public were required to do the enrollment, updating the student's profile online via the DepEd learner information system (LIS) website.

DepEd LIS
The Department of Education while on the process of accomplishing its new school forms as required for this school year 2013 - 2014 had set up two groups in the Facebook to handle issues met by the teachers for the first time.

They are the following:

1. School Forms Reengineering Team (SFRT)

Practically this team is on hand to guide the teachers through a visual aid or illustration only to give highlights on a certain point or topic. There are 8 admins assigned to their respective tasks like handling the influx of huge number of teachers who would like to join the group, among others. Sir Jonathan Diche who is the chief admin of this group regularly interacts with the others admins like Jeth Sansano Aquino, Erwin Yumping, SIS DepEd, Melb Ballesteros Endozo, Alvin Castro, lma Alonzo, and this blogger.

Simple Steps in Adding Personnel in LIS Education Site

Teachers all over the country particularly in the Department of Education of the PH are doing overtime in enrolling their pupils for this school year 2013-2014 to online registration provided by Learners Information System website.

As an innovation introduced by DepEd, teachers have found some basic problems in encoding their respective school enrollment data. One of them is assigning an adviser to a section of a particular grade. The school head as the admin for this site has the authority to do this function.

To update Personnel Record in Learners Information System (LIS) in which he or she could be connected to a certain class section as adviser, he has to log in the site of LIS (www.lis.deped.gov.ph) using the password used in ebeis or given to him by their ICT personnel or Division Planning Officer.

Testing TFI Programming Studes System Workability

The student of TFI, particularly the programming class of 4A1 and 4B1 had taken the challenge to defend their system program as a part of their requirement in computer programming class under Sir Gilbor D. Camporazo, Jr. of Technological Foundation Institute, Bago City, Philippines.

This is an actual testing or an application of their knowledge, skills and attitude in creating a program code to run their particular system which displays a series of forms declaring the basic information asked or encoded.

Every group is allotted an hour to have their presentation of their output, to run it and be ready to answer the practical questions raised by Sir Camporazo  based on the performance of their system with a corresponding rating equivalent to 100%.

How To Sustain Text2Teach Program

Our school, Cubay Elementary School, is one of those recipients of Text2Teach Program of Ayala Foundation, Inc. and four selected grade 5 and 6 teachers have undergone the 3-day training for the first batch.

On the third, every school head has to come up with a school action plan to effectively implement Text2Teach technology to grades 5 and 6 pupils.

My four teachers, Mrs. Jema B. Esparagoza, English; Ms. Gemma D. Salazar, Science; Mr. Edgardo S. Amar, Math; and Mr. Mario A. Malacaman, Values Education, who joined the training huddled together and we discussed the practical areas of concern to deliver the services needed for our pupils.

We have decided to limit them into 6 categories and I reported them before my fellow, school heads in attendance.
