After Retiring, Then What?

This is the ordinary question that keeps on haunting me while waiting for 100 days to retire from the government service. By October 2016, I would be completing my 25 years in the Department of Education as a classroom teacher, a head teacher, and a school principal.

I would be missing my previous teachers, my co-administrators and especially my 7 schools which 6 out of these schools, I had administered and supervised the teachers and had a communication with the stakeholders particularly the parents and the community elected officials who had worked for hand in hand with me for the good of the school and for the academic welfare of the pupils.

Getting Out of the Mess After Retiring from the Job

I have just retired from the government service after working with the Department of Education (DepEd) for 25 years. I have come home with the great "rubbish" from my latest school assignment. They content bulk of my personal documents, manuals, references, office orders, among others. It is impractical or improper for me to leave there in school for nobody could benefit or make use of them.

I took two to three days to make them place to their rightful place. I segregate those documents for proper disposal for reuse and for shredding or burning. I keep the manuals and references for donation to the public library or to be given to my co-school head who doesn't have that ready references. Of course, I keep my personal appointment, service records, certificates of awards and recognition.

Similar Task

I have a mini library at home. I want to get rid some of those books which have been published more than 10 years and teaching manuals and textbooks which I have used when I was teaching before as a classroom teacher. Periodicals and old newspapers and magazines. There are also pocket books, novels, and do-it manuals.

I pack those books and donate to our city library. Those old magazines, newspapers and periodicals are weighed and sold to the buy-and-sell business venture and use the money to repaint my mini library wall. By the way, the pocket books and novels are given to my close relatives especially those who love reading them and who are still studying in college. They are so grateful receiving them.

How To Check Your GSIS Records

If you are government employee or especially public school teacher, you can check your record in the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) in its website particularly the Service Record.

Service record is one of the major requirements for the teachers and the school heads who want to retire in the service upon reaching the retirement age of 60. This is a requirement that has made my retirement papers delay. I already reached the age of 65, a compulsory age for retirement.

The delay was due to the unreconciled service record I have had issued by the Division Office where I belong and with the GSIS service record. My retirement took effect last October 14, 2016 and the GSIS service record showed the January 1, 2014 as my latest service rendered.

There's a discrepancy therefore. So I was advised to tell our Division authorized personnel officer to send a scanned copy of my latest service record to the email address provided by the GSIS.

Retirement Principle: Off the Service, In the Service

To retire then what? That is the question what I have to answer. What should be my plan? It hurts to say goodbye to those persons whom I have served for several years which our companionship and camaraderie are well established. We're just brothers and sisters that we belong to one family. Sooner or later, I could adjust to a private life. No one to serve but my family, my children, my wife, and of course the Lord.

There is an adopted saying and I quote, "Once a teacher is always a teacher". How I wish I could personally relate this oft-quoted saying. I officially retired last October 14, out of diligent and faithful 25-year service to the Department of Education (DepEd) as a classroom teacher  in 2 schools, and a school principal of 6 schools.

I am deeply honored to work with the DepEd for 25 years. I was elated for the tribute which my teachers in my last school assignment given me. In short video presentation they've created, it defines me of who I am. It certainly describes me - "a loving husband, a caring father, a good friend, a determined leader."

My wife and I had maintained a faithful married life for 44 years. I hadn't failed my sons and daughters of rearing them up to the "nurture and admonition of the Lord." I am a person who keeps a friend and loyal to them. For 25 years, God knows how I worked and dealt my teachers who were under me, and how I discharged my duties and responsibilities as educational leader.

Retirement Day : Saying Goodbye Breaks My Heart

"Do I need to say goodbye?" This bothers me at this moment which counts down to days and weeks for my day of retiring from the government service till October 14. I have been a classroom teacher for 9 years and a school head for 4 years and school principal for 12 years. These constitute my more than 25-year services in the Department of Education (DepEd).

As what I have written to other writing sites I have joined, I quoted lines from the  popular song of 1969, "Leaving on a jet plane", these lines said "all my bags are packed. I'm ready to go. I'm standing here outside your door. I hate to wake you up and say goodbye..."
