How to Make Marriage Last Forever

(This is a repost of my article posted in Literacy Base site entitled "Making Marriage Last Forever" written on November 27, 2016.)

When we first exchanged our “I Dos” 44 years ago (1972), we kept in mind that our marriage would last till death. The officiating city judge told us that our vow was binding “till death do we part”. That’s it. We were 21 years old at that time and we were still studying in college.

The first year, the second year until the 7th year of our married life was full of challenges in various extent. We had even a time that we’d been separated for several months and later we were able to reconcile and started all over again. It was the greatest trial we ever had in our marital relationship.

At the 8th year of our marriage, everything had changed. We had found the secret of making our marriage stays as inspiring and loving all the time even as of this posting time. We had found the truth that marriage is ordained of God, that everyone of us has the spiritual responsibility for our children by letting them grow up according to the “nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

A Decade of Faithful Relationship of Edjie and Narlyn

A perfect relationship seems to be attainable for a man and a woman. In like manner, nobody is perfect. But in the process it could be realized as they both are doing their duties and responsibilities without counting the cost of all the sacrifices, the trials, the challenges that may come to their lives as what Jesus did to all mankind.

It has been said that marriage is ordained of God and God's perfect attributes are the guiding principles for the married couples as they exchange "I Dos" in time they get married. These spiritual virtues are not difficult to follow. And this is what the Bible says, "... the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance..." (Galatians 5:22-23, KJV)

By line upon, precept upon precept, my wife and I tried our best to accomplish these things and so far we have reached our 45 years of faithful and happy marriage life comes April 21 for we're married in 1972.

No Penny, When I Get Married

Manila Philippines Temple

I remember 40 years ago today when I was married with my high school sweetheart even a single centavo in my pocket I didn't have. I was 21 years old then, and still studying in college taking course in commerce. I was still dependent from my parents for I was the youngest.

With such teenage marriage, I never realized how could I able to support my own family soon when I've one. What I was thinking that I've loved my sweetheart. We were meant for each other. "I Need You In My Life" , our theme song, was appropriate for our undying love story.

What To Do When Marriage Is About To Turn Apart?

Man and woman
Marital differences among couples when left unattended will eventually result to a broken marriage.

I read about the endangered married life of Rick and Jane from the book of Paul K. Browning. Their marriage was practically about to fall apart for some reasons which they couldn't solve them for themselves. They wanted to find a remedy to their marital predicament. They didn't want their  relationship be worsened and be forever be unresolved.

So these couple went to a counselor for help in resolving the differences that were gradually tearing their marriage apart. They poured out their problems, their misunderstanding while the counselor listened to their stories. Both told him of ways they had been wronged by the other. Their resentment was so deep that the counselor didn't see how they could be reconciled.

Why October 13, 1951?

Gil and Rebecca in 1969
Gil and Rebecca in 1969
Sometime in 1968 when I was then a third year student of La Carlota City High School, one afternoon, I had just finished attending my music class in the study hall when the rain began to fall. While all of my classmates rushed to the Science Hall building to take shelter for the study hall is open, no walls and only improvised board and benches were there, I was left all alone. In this solicitude, I noticed a girl of my age took shelter in the same place where I was stranded. I took a glimpse of the girl who was carrying some notebooks, books, and a magazine. To break the silence and being curious, I attempted to borrow the magazine from her. But before doing that, I took momentarily a deep, long breath while turning back from her to get rid of my nervousness. Just on time to get back to her, I found her gone unnoticed.

Predestined

Many days and months passed. When I was about to attend our Mathematics class in the extension building just across the back of the main building of the school, I saw the girl, whom I guessed the same girl I had seen lately in the study hall. She was heading toward me where I was standing. I spotted a magazine from her hand and what a coincidence the same magazine she had last time I first met her. Meeting her again I was brightened up for she was with my neighbor, Mila Tapales. I greeted Mila hello with a little shame. I bargained with Mila if she could request her companion to let me borrow her magazine. Assured by Mila that we were neighbors and nothing will happen to her magazine, the girl lent it to me. Alas! We were not introduced to each other for both of us were in a hurry to catch with our classes.

I Love You Not Because You're Beautiful!

Red Heart"I love you," not because you're beautiful, not because you're rich and wealthy, not because you're extra-ordinary, not because of your good attitude, but just because "you are what you are."

"I LOVE YOU" - these three little words make and unmake my love life. These words when I uttered for the first time to express my feeling to my idolized coed during my high school days, didn't mean so much to me. I treated them as a password to my "love" which later I realized that it was an infatuation, an affection of "falling in love." I fell in love with her because that was I felt. I wanted to see here everyday. I couldn't explain my emotion every time I couldn't see her in school. I wanted to hasten the night to become a day so that I could be with her again. It was because I fell in love with here. I was in "love."

Another point I realize that love is blind. Some lovers are realistic. Some are not. Some are attracted to others because of their beauty, of their good physical attributes, of their loving-and-caring, thoughtful attitude. They love each other subjectively. But others love their opposite sex whoever they are. Their affection is focused on the whole being of their sweethearts. What really counts for them is their relationship that takes care for their future.
