Marital differences among couples when left unattended will eventually result to a broken marriage.
I read about the endangered married life of Rick and Jane from the book of Paul K. Browning. Their marriage was practically about to fall apart for some reasons which they couldn't solve them for themselves. They wanted to find a remedy to their marital predicament. They didn't want their relationship be worsened and be forever be unresolved.
So these couple went to a counselor for help in resolving the differences that were gradually tearing their marriage apart. They poured out their problems, their misunderstanding while the counselor listened to their stories. Both told him of ways they had been wronged by the other. Their resentment was so deep that the counselor didn't see how they could be reconciled.
The counselor didn't have the immediate solution to their problems. Instead he handed the couple a Bible and asked them to open it to Matthew, chapters 5 through 7. He asked them to read the entire Sermon on the Mount out loud, together, three times till one week. He advised them that after reading it they're going to name at least one thing that they must change to bring their life into harmony with its teachings. He committed the couple that they must not tell each other how to change, but focus on what they must do.
After a week, they returned to the counselor's office, manifesting friendly attitude to each other. They were ready to talk about the ways to compromise and cooperate. They had accomplished three good things as a result of their Bible reading.
And these things were: 1. The couple realized that reading the scriptures together brought the Spirit back into their marriage. 2. The assignment (reading the Sermon on the Mount) forced them to examine their own motives and behaviors rather than those of their spouse. 3. They did the assignment without fighting.
Eventually, the couple were reconciled. Their about-to-fall-apart marriage was resolved. The spiritual insights from the Sermon on the Mount had healed their unhealthy marital relationship. Thus, they started a renewed married life with a peace of mind and a understanding, loving heart.
