Sharing Responsibility Making Things Light and Easy

"Helping people to help themselves" is the underlying principle of Church program on Self-Reliance and Welfare. This is the answer to the one of the major concerns of the La Carlota District of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

President Mario A. Malacaman of La Carlota District disclosed that genuine concern of the members in the recent District Conference held at La Carlota Meetinghouse to Elder Carlos G. Revillo, Jr. of the Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints, who presided over the said conference.

'Self-Reliance Is the Beginning of Progress'

“Self-reliance is the ability, commitment, and effort to provide the spiritual and temporal necessities of life for self and family” (Handbook 2: Administering the Church [2010], 6.1.1).

President Thomas S. Monson has counseled, “[Self-reliance] is an essential element in our spiritual as well as our temporal well-being.” (“Guiding Principles of Personal and Family Welfare,” Ensign, Sept. 1986, 3)

With the above context, President Elmer Epifanio Sudario Sumagpao of Bacolod Philippines Mission in his message to the 27 Self-Reliance 3-month Workshop and Seminar completers pointed out that self-reliant is not only for temporal aspect of the completers but also for their spiritual self-reliance. He further said that they have to work hard to sustain their family.

Carissa Online CampShoppe Getting Visible

A new online shop called #CampShoppe is opened by Ma. Carissa for her self reliance business to support her studies.

This Carissa Online Shop caters locally especially customers from Bacolod, La Carlota City, and La Castellana, Negros Occidental, Philippines for their needs in beauty products, fashions and dresses, among others.

There are several products to choose from line of products like fashion dresses, bags, shoes to beauty care and items to order and the delivery is free within the locality covered.

LDS Way of Bridging Self-Reliance Gap

For all we know, statistics show that there were many poor and needy Filipinos. No wonder the Philippine government has already addressing this particular socio-economic problem through the so-called the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) by giving or extending the conditional cash transfer (CCT) to those legitimate beneficiaries/grantees.

Anyway, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) or popularly known as Mormons has its own practical way of addressing their members who are poor and needy through their self-reliance program.

Seventy-four thousand two hundred eleven (74,211) adult members of the Mormons belong to the poor and the needy category. Thirty-Seven percent (37%) of these or 38,197 were unemployed and thirty-three percent (33%) or 36,014 were underemployed.
