The Wondrous Sunset

What a view! What a wonder! These are the things I have thought for myself upon seeing a sunset in a distant while traveling going home after a day visit to my third daughter's friend in Barangay Tagukon, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

As I have said  while we were heading home, we were met by a wondrous, amazing view of the sunset. To appreciate, this wonder of nature, I composed a poem reflecting of those things that what we had left in the past which has nothing to give us but memories.

To be able to read, write and count are three of the most basic skills every learner should acquire. These will help them advance through school and ultimately succeed in life. But learning these fundamentals doesn’t develop naturally. It takes careful planning and instruction at the right age.

This is where the manner of teaching is given importance. Reading, writing and counting has to be taught effectively at the right early age. One teacher emphasizes that the “quality of teaching in the early grades is crucial to the quality of learning in the higher grades.” And this is what the Early Language Literacy and Numeracy program addresses through the professional development of the teachers.

The ELLN program, which looks to complete its nationwide in-service training for teacher development especially for K-3 teachers, has brought a lot of opportunities for these participant teachers: from being able to express themselves and their ideas on teaching effectively to committing to do their responsibilities as “life-touchers.” The program reminds them that the profile of their students are paramount in defining appropriate teaching strategies.

CES : Memorable School to Reckon With

Three school heads were able to revisit their former school while conducting their District reading assessment and math inventory to check the skills of the school children under the said district.

Reading and computing are the basic skills the pupils must master for them to be considered as learned and educated.

Reading measures the pupils ability to comprehend, ability to analyze, ability pronounce or enunciate the words or phrases in a given selection.

Computing tests the pupils ability to count, ability to quantify numbers, and the ability to measures or perform the basic mathematics operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

These inventories are usually conducted by the school right after the first periodical tests. By this, the school principal may determine the number of pupils his school has and he is in advantage position to adapt intervention for those who are non-readers, needed help, and those who couldn't master the basic mathematical operations.

November 25 is declared by the Department of Education as the Nationwide Reading Day/Araw ng Pagbasa and the DEpEd also has declared November as "National Reading Month of Every Year".

To comply with this declaration, all elementary schools of the division of La Carlota have conducted a whole-day synchronized storytelling/story reading in support of the ten-point agenda of the Aquino Administration and the institutionalization of "Every Child a Reader Program" (ECARP), of the Department of Education.

The Cubay Elementary School, one of the 23 public elementary schools in La Carlota conducted its own its reading story activities for the whole day. This writer who is the school principal of the school supervised the reading sessions.
