Listening to Faith in Every Footstep Music

Recollecting our semi-annual conference of the Church for Saturday Session which had just been concluded after the Priesthood Leadership training and the Single-Adult and Mothers’ training/workshop  sometime in July 2016.

The district choir rendered their own version of “Faith in Every Footstep” which reminded me of the experiences encountered by the pioneer of the Church in the middle of 1830s. As I listened to the 45-member choir, I imagined how those early Church members sacrificed while migrating to the place called Salt Lake.

Likewise, I was contemplating on how the choir sang it according to their way of interpreting it. I was evaluating mentally the time and effort which their trainer, their chorister trained them. I could relate it perfectly for I had been training the choir in the late 80s. It was too difficult to train the participants for their respective voice parts like the bass and the tenor for the males, and the soprano and the alto for the females.

Gil and Gil Get Acquainted in Music

While I was taking my early morning routine of brisk walking, I noticed a man who was following me at the back, carrying something on his vest. As he went nearer, I overheard a musical instrument was playing.

I looked back and saw a man in his late 50s playing a waltz music from his old Estella accordion. I continued walking. When I noticed that he stopped in front of ambulant store of my friend just across the Catholic church, I discontinued my walking and returned, going nearer to him. I listened to him playing "Paper Roses" while he was singing.

I usually heard music played from a guitar, organ, piano, but not in accordion. Besides I have not seen one in my life before except in movie and in the internet.

Hearing an accordion played for the first time is exciting and fun as a music lover.

Have you seen an accordion? It is a musical instrument powered by a bellows manipulated by the player or accordionist. It is carried in a handy-light weight box-shaped case by the accordionist.

Singing Together and Getting Acquainted

My friend and schoolmate Jito and I joined with him singing that old love song. He also played "Que Sera, Que Sera" and other oldies.

Momentarily, we became acquainted. He belongs to Rodrgiquez family, a prominent family in our place. He's Gil, short for Virgilio same nickname I have. He's the younger brother of my family government physician, Dr. Rodriguez.

He's friendly, easy to talk with. He told me that he learned to play accordion by self when he was still a kid for he's father was an accordionist. By the way his older brother, Dr. Rodriguez is a violinist.

Gil wearing a short with a casual dress was on his way to the house of a retired high school teacher, Ma'm Santillan who is also my acquaintance for we have been classmate before in our master's class in 2000s, to serenade for her birthday today.

Gil has met Gil. What another coincidence! Another momentous event in my life.

The Day I Played The Guitar

I remember when I was in Grade One, my late father brought home a ukelele, a small 4-stringed musical instrument. I was surprised why Tatay bought it for nobody in the house knew how to play it. I saw him strumming it but I didn't think it's a music.

By the way,I'm no music minded when I was a kid. I only used to listen to radio for a drama, news and commentaries. Although there were times but not often I also listened to love songs, popular songs, and local songs.

After playing Tatay hanged it on the wall. I was curious. I took the "small guitar", strummed it at my own will, without pressing any string with my left hand fingers. When I came home after my classes, I did play it until its strings went off to nowhere for unjust strumming. I broke the uke but I never learned at all.

One market day I saw a little boy playing a guitar perfectly while singing. I asked myself on how he did it. I talked to myself, "that boy could play the guitar so well. Could I also play it? Why not?"

Thomas Leslie Goodwin III | The Poet and The Musician

I remember my poet and musician friend, Thomas Leslie Goodwin III whom I came across here in the Net while I was searching for my family tree sometime in April 2007, and I stumbled upon his genealogy.

I was impressed of his well-being especially the way he was brought up, his poems and his music.

Thomas was born on November 5, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia. His family moved from Norfolk to Princess Anne County in 1959 (later Virginia Beach) Virginia. He attended Aragona Elementary School (Princess Anne County), Kellam High School (Virginia Beach) ) and graduated from Maury High School (Norfolk). He have managed to gain a "little" more education since.

In March 1965, he enlisted in the Navy with his Dad, while his grandfather looked on. His Dad and grandfather had enlisted together during WWII. He was very proud and happy on that day. He retired in June 1998. He was married three times. The first didn't stick. His second marriage was in 1973 and then again in 1988. Those marriages ended in divorce.

Why Did I Compose a Song?

It was in May 20, 1970 when I wrote and composed my first amateur song entitled "My Singing Doll." And I rediscovered it sometime last week when I was cleaning my dust-filled bookshelves. Then I stumbled upon an old, crumpled brown envelop. I didn't mind it for awhile what's in it. I put it aside then continued my work.

While I was about to finish dusting off the shelves, I took a glanced with the said envelop. Nothing of interest, just curious about it, I opened and checked inside and this is what I saw:

"My Singing Doll"

This was the product of my amateur interest in music. I loved to sing since I was a grade six pupil. I used to sing the popular song of The Beatles, "A World Without Love." I didn't have any idea what was it all about. I just kept on singing it. Until I realized that some of these lyrics were predestined of what I had composed for my high school sweetheart.

The unforgettable lyrics of the said pop song:

           "So I wait, and in a while
           I will see my true love smile 
           She may come, I know not when..."

Yes that was 1966, four years later that I composed the song for that mysterious girl. Then after 2 years we got married. We were meant for each other.

Missing You Davy Jones!

I'll be missing, Davy Jones of The Monkees, who sang "I Wanna Be Free" which became the top in American single chart of 1967 for seven weeks. And it was my favorite in the late '60s, which I used to sing it with my high school peer group (barkada).

Davy Jones, the lead vocalist of the American pop rock group called The Monkees, passed away on February 29, 2012 of a heart attack at the age of 66.

His death was announced in his official website: DavyJones.Net:

Jessica has lost a devoted husband, and Talia, Sarah, Jessica, and Annabel a loving father, while Harrison, Lauren, and Phoenix have lost a proud grandfather. G'BORJZ 2008: Original Song Compositions

G'BORJZ 2008 is the first original musical album of my youngest son, Gilbor Camporazo, Jr. It contains 15 songs. Twleve are his original compositions. And the other 3 are his own version of LDS songs like "We'll walk by Faith", "The Rising", and "I'm trying to be Like Jesus".

Gilbor Junior, now 25, is a reserved guy with an innate talents. Song writing and music composition is one of his hobbies. As a self-made musician, he plays the lead and rhythm guitar. After I taught him on how to read musical notes and dynamics and on how to play piano and the guitar, he displayed an extraordinary ability. And he even surpassed me in musical ability.

Aside from music, he is also a dance instructor, a cartoonist; a charcoal, and portrait artist and even a graphics artist.

Except "Pretendin' I'm Alright" (2007), he had composed and recorded the songs in this album, G'BORJZ 2008 just a matter of 5 months, while preparing for his mission to serve at the Lord's vineyard. He started composing some of his songs on April 2008 and finished the rest on August 2008, 2 months before he went out on a mission.

Ninoy Aquino Falling In Love Three Times

Slain Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. fell in love with the late Corazon Cojuangco three times. He fell in love with her for the first time when she was in her teenage years. The second time when she bore their child. And the third time when she morally, courageously and patriotically supporting Ninoy who was fighting for Filipino's freedom against the Marcos suppressive government for 20 years.

To gratefully acknowledge Cory's endearing love and care for him, Ninoy wrote a poem, "I Have Fallen in Love", for her. Read the poem and ponder about it:
