3 Easy Ways of Writing

Writing though takes some skills to get into what we want to communicate could be done in three simple ways. These things we learned from our late Grade 6 English-and-grammar teacher. She's our class adviser.



Since we're required to write a composition in various themes, we struggled to overcome our limited writing knowledge on writing. Every month we kept on rewriting and rewriting what we'd written. In doing so, we'd learned from her to write simply is to observe the 3-paragraph method. And we appreciated it as we're developing our skill in writing.

P977M Allowances for Public School Teachers with 'Hardship Posts'

Those public school teachers who haven't been paid for their hardship allowance last year would have now the opportunity to receive theirs.

Those teachers who are exposed to a risky or hazardous teaching working place would be receiving allowances anew as DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones approved the release of P977 million for their special allowances for "hardship posts" in a recent news.

These allowances are based on 15 to 25 percent of the basic salary of the teachers who are exposed to hardship or difficulty of work.

Dear teachers and parents, administrators and staff, education partners and stakeholders:

Not too long ago—six years to be exact—I remember making those first cautious steps as I entered the hallowed halls of our Bulwagan ng Karunungan here at the DepED Central Office in Pasig where I received the department’s colors from my predecessor. At noontime today, I will return home to my community of De La Salle Brothers to be assigned to yet to another ministry still in education after a year of sabbatical.

At the start of my term, I was so stricken by the quixotic ideal to serve and change the system. At times I would be driven with a messianic complex and seek to be the savior of 47,000+ schools. I can’t help but take things personally when I would read about the travails of a student who would have to walk miles daily or the predicaments of a debt-ridden teacher on whom an extended family depends. Faced with the biggest bureaucracy in the Philippine government, it dawned on me after a while that I would end up disheartened if I even tried to singlehandedly overhaul the educational system just so I can leave my imprint in the department.

Writing, a Legacy from my Grade Six Teacher

My grade six class adviser had taught me the secret of writing that works and I considered it as the important skill I never ever forget. And this led me to what I am now: a successful teacher, a school principal, . No wonder why, writing becomes my passion when I was a grader.

Where is this teacher of mine now? It was almost for 49 years ago that this teacher took care of us in her class as our adviser and teacher in grade six section one.

Since we live in the same place, I used to see her early in the morning going to Church when I took a morning walk at the back of the city hall.

Alas! I came across from one of my news feeds in the Facebook recently that she has already passed away and she had been buried a year already from one of the posts I read.

I was a bit guilty then for I hadn't even made a vigil for her wake nor attended her burial for she's living within the city where I am residing. It was I know a miscommunication. No one from one of my classmates informed me.

I am referring to Miss Lilia G. Garin, my grade six class adviser sometime in 1966 in La Carlota Elementary School. She's strict when it comes to class attendance and misbehavior. But too considerate to a weakling like me who is sickly.

As a school head of Balabag Elementary School, La Carlota City, I share to them the eternal principles behind a father. This is a reminder to all of them that the coming third Sunday of the month of June is a special day. It is Father's Day.

Father is always used when we say our prayer. We address our heavenly Father for He is the great provider. Father, therefore is a divine, sacred title for that matter. It is no joke to be addressed as a father. Likewise, it should be respected in a most reverent manner.

With this special occasion for a father, I am also reminded of the eight values which my late father has taught and influenced me when he was still living. One of them is "taking time out for God".

Children are the future and if we neglect to focus time and energy on their education, we will be in a world of hurt long before we hope to be. The unfortunate part of this subject is that there are many areas all around our globe that do not have the money or resources to educate children. Luckily, there are things you can do to change this.

Why Is It So Important to Educate?

Like previously stated, children are the future. If we fail to educate them and provide the resources for knowledge, we will remain in the same cycle we have been stuck in. Without the advancement of knowledge, there would be no technology. Healthcare would be drastically different and there are many diseases that we may not have cures for. We would not be able to enjoy modern movies and you can forget about watching one in theaters or on IMAX. These are just some examples of what knowledge and education have lead to. If we continue focusing on educating children and feeding their minds with knowledge, there is no telling how advanced our world may become. There is so much potential in children as long as the focus is given to them. Without the right tools, they may never get to develop into the world changing individual that remains inside. This is a disservice to children everywhere. It is a disservice to yourself and the world as a whole. Things can be better and even if you are not a teacher, you can make a difference.

Livelihood Loan - 'Excellent Opportunity' for Teachers

More than 60,000 Public school teachers, both in elementary and secondary of the Department of Education may have now the opportunity to avail the Livelihood Loan Facility (LLF) of the Land of the Philippines in a recent agreement signed by the Education Secretary and Land Bank President.

Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro of Department of Education (DepEd) and Land Bank President Gilda E. Pico of the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) providing the DepEd employees to avail of loans in the Land Bank with a lower interest rate than that of the private banks and other lending institutions.

LIS Users: Where Do I Start?

All public school teachers in elementary and in secondary are required to enroll their pupils and students online via Learner Information System website.

Their work commenced when this school year 2013 - 2014 is about to end. Every school has been provided for its username and access code to the site in an orientation conducted by its respective Division Office Planning officer.

To this effect, Education Secretary issued an order for strict compliance that the data of every school learner in the country with their respective learner reference number (LRN) be encoded until March 31 (however, it is extended to April 30 as the deadline).

La Carlota DepEd Tackles Guidelines on Hiring Teachers for SY 2014-2015

After tendering a luncheon meeting with the 13 Department of Education (DepEd) employees affected by the recent rationalization plan of the mentioned agency, La Carlota SDS Porita M. Mallorca led the schools heads in a thorough deliberation on the issue on hiring prospective qualified teachers.

Schools Division Superintendent Mallorca in a verbatim discussions on the provisions stipulated in DepEd Order No. 14, series 2014 issued by Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro, FBC dated 14 March 2014 said that the content of the said guidelines should be understood, questions or clarifications be properly attended to, that is, to avoid misinterpretation and to refrain from wrong generalization.

She noted that some of the provisions included in this order are favorable to the teacher-applicants especially the kindergarten teachers. This Order with enclosure of 17 pages so provides the guidelines on hiring teacher 1 positions for school year 2014 - 2015 and it should be implemented immediately.

Teachers Should Be Recognized

Have you asked yourself,  what is a teacher? The answer, of course, may vary. The following is the message I delivered to my teachers in Nagasi Elem. School when I was still their principal in October, four years ago:

A PERSON who teaches the children how to write, how to read, and how to do math and much more;

A PERSON who explains things to children how do they work, how do they operate, and how do they become useful for them and other people;

A PERSON who analyzes situations especially difficult ones for the children to easily understand and be able to come up with the practical solutions;

A PERSON who cares for the children as his/her own children; thus never neglecting them and let them learn and appreciate the value of being educated, and comes to school early always prepared with every needful things ready for the children to study;

Salibio, The Bishop I Worked With, Is Anointed

I miss the person I most admired as a good ecclesiastical leader of our Church after he retired from his job as a master teacher of La Carlota South Elementary School 1 and he transferred residence to Laguna, Metro Manila.

Now he's enjoying his life with his loving wife, married daughters and vibrant and wonderful grandchildren, and receiving his monthly pension with gusto. He is a layman called as a Bishop by the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to lead a group of LDS saints here in our place. I have no doubt of supporting, sustaining him in his spiritual calling as a Bishop in our ward.

I was able to come across with his recent pictures while I was browsing my social media account and he was celebrating his 72th year birthday at that time. So I was thinking on what tribute I could share him in his special day. Well, I have come up with this humble tribute for him by being grateful for his kindness, for his sincere friendship and camaraderie, and of his being helpful and caring for the flocks under his stewardship including my own family.

Teachers Now Ready for Opening of Classes

Teachers are now ready for the opening of classes in June. Preparing of the regular classes is all it takes for the teachers in the small Division of La Carlota City. In this division, everything is ready.

Meaning, not only school facilities have been prepared for the opening of classes this June, the newly hired teachers and those who are already teaching for one year up to three years in the public elementary and secondary schools have been also prepared in the Division 3-day seminar/workshop as a part of teachers' induction program.

In June 3 as the opening and regular conduct of classes in the public elementary and secondary schools in the said Division of La Carlota City start, these teachers are not only ready for their  classes, but they are well-equipped of the methods, techniques and even the skills to teach their pupils competently.

Missing My Friend, Rolando Claud!

While we were attending our latest administrative meeting in our local division conference hall, I overheard my fellow principal talking to one of his teachers in a cellphone.

After he made a call, I interrupted him and told him that his call was too serious and they're planning to have a visit with his teachers.

"Rolando Claud passed a way," he simply told me that. I couldn't believe what I heard. I confirmed if I did hear it right. And he replied absolutely yes.

I was held aback for a moment. My tears seemed to drop. What a loss!

Who Is Rolando Claud?

We're acquainted while we were studying in college. We were staffer of The College Voice, the official school publication of the college. He's the paper's artist and I was the editor-in-chief. He's an education student while I was a commerce student. He graduated ahead of me and taught in elementary school in the Division of La Carlota City.

Sometime in 1960, when I was in grade one, a memorable incident took place and became the greatest influence of my life and made me of what I am today. It started when I was playing with the two tiny turtles from our improvised terrarium inside our classroom.

When I was in Grade one, I belong to section 7, the last section.

Early in the morning at that day, we attended the flag ceremony. After that we proceeded to our humble classroom. Our class adviser, Ma'm Dolores Acot formed several groups and assigned them to their respective ground assignment to clean. I wasn't given any group to work with for I was overlooked. What I did is to look for something to do. Thus, I picked some dried or withered leaves from the bushes along the foot walk, and weeded out and cultivated some ornamental plants at the back of our classroom.
