Inexplicable Feelings to Serving Special Kids in Scouting

Nearly hundred boy and girl scouts of La Carlota SPED (Special Education) Integrated School had undergone two-day scouting activities.

I was honored to be their trainer/discussant on the basic scouting movement in our country Philippines.  These scouts which are composed of hearing impaired, deaf and mute, fast learners come from grades 1 to 6 and high school level.

They had learned the value of their scout uniform and recited the scout oath and law, executed scout salute and scout handshake. They had composed their own patrol songs and yells.

Training Teachers in Scouting

Scouting can build a character especially for the boys. Teachers have capability to do it. Thus, they need to be trained in scouting to make an exemplary scout from their pupils or students.

Scouting as it has been known by the leaders in the said prestigious international and well-respected organization, it is not a science that has to be "solemnly" studied nor it is a set or collection of doctrines and texts.

This a line for the task given me as one of the support staff of the recent basic training course for leaders like outfit, troop, kawan and lakay of the Boy Scout of the Philippines held at the Haguimit Elementary School, Division of La Carlota City.

"What is scouting?" is one of those evaluation questions for all trainees before they share their talents of songs and yells, and a skit. They have to undergo basic practical obstacles and have to answer three questions satisfactorily as an application of what they have learned from the 3-day training.

This is the first time that I visited Dao, Capiz while attending the 5-day Boy Scout of the Philippines 21st Western Visayas Regional Jamborette, in 6 February 2008 after an hour of opening ceremony at the grand arena, Camp Escutin, Brgy. Matagnop, Dao, Capiz.

Sometime in 2007, "Dao was declared regional champion for the first time in the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran (GPK) annual search in Western Visayas," said PIA news.

"Dao town, which is included in Category B (4th to 6th class municipality) has been declared as first runner-up in said regional competition for more or less five consecutive years before it eventually captured the regional title," added the news.

Dao is one of the 16 towns of the province of Capiz. It is a 4th class municipality. In 2000 census, it has a population of 30,623 people in 5,921 households. It has 20 barangays: Aganan, Agtambi, Agtanguay, Balucuan, Bita, Centro, Daplas, Duyoc, Ilas Sur, Lacaron, Malonoy, Manhoy, Mapulang Bato, Matagnop, Nasunogan, Poblacion Ilawod, Poblacion Ilaya, Quinabcaban, Quinayuya, and San Agustin (Ilas Norte).

What Makes Scouting Distinct?

Boy Scouts are trained to be responsible citizens, said City Assistant Scout Commissioner Ferdinand S. Sy of La Carlota Scouting Council in the opening ceremony of the first Patrol Leaders Training Course in Haguimit Elementary School Saturday, November 5, 2011.

"No amount of training could be useful, if it's not applied in school, in the community, or in our country," stressed Sy.

Scouting movement is one of the distinct organizations. Every member of scouting is identified as such for the presence of their uniform, Sy said. This organization is also known for its activities like camping, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, sports, woodcrafts.
