Public school teachers, both in elementary and high school, are entitled for summer proportionate pay as one of their remuneration benefits as provided by law.
Rumors of cutting off teachers’ salary benefit during summer vacation have circulated particularly during the recent elections in the country in which a Senator is held responsible for such unwelcome move filed in the Senate.
Letter Received
On the first week of January 2014, I received a personalized letter from the office of Senator Antonio "Sonny" F. Trillanes IV.
It was late in the afternoon of Monday after office hour while I was waiting for a motorized tricycle to get me to the Globe office for I am going to pay my monthly bill, I noticed that my daughter-in-law was catching me while I was about to get in. She handed me a sealed mail. I never minded it for I assumed that it was a Globe letter of collection which I used to receive every month.
After I paid my bill, now I opened the letter and it was an official mail from the office of Senator Antonio “Sony” F. Trillanes IV and it was personally addressed to me as the principal of Cubay Elementary School. I read it again while heading home at that time.
Not True
The good senator has informed me that it is not true that he has a filed a bill, removing the salaries of teachers during summer break. He vehemently denied it. He hadn't advocated such measure.
In fact, he continued in his letter that he has introduced bills on the professional and economic upliftment of teachers' lives. These are among those bills: Senate Bill No. 487, increasing the minimum salary grade of public school teachers (salary grade 10 to salary grade 20, amounting to P36,000), and Senate Bill No. 636, creating plantilla position in the department of education for volunteer teachers.
He closed his letter by stressing that he remains steadfast in his commitment in championing the cause of teachers.
He is apt to clarify this rumor for he has been a victim of black propaganda and he suffered the ill-effects of it, the letter said.
Why Am I Sharing This?
I am sharing this without any string attach or whatever consideration for I believe on what he is fighting for and he wants this to be properly disseminated to the rest of the public school teachers. In fact, Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro has forwarded us (school heads) a copy of Senator Trillanes' letter to him, which is self-explanatory. Actually, it deals on the malicious text messages pointing primarily Senator Antonio Trillanes IV as the author of the bill stopping teachers' salaries on summer vacation.
Teachers’, School Administrators’ Stance
Teachers and fellow school administrators now we know the truth. Let the truth prevail, so to speak.
