Beginning this year 2012, the clothing allowance of the teachers in the public schools will be increased from Php4,000 to Php5,000.
Though the increase is meager, but yet it could augment the clothing needs of the teachers and could even bolster their morale of attaining the quality of education in the public school.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) claimed that this is a "victory" for them as one of the 10-point demand for greater education budget has been approved.
It was pointed out that the teachers from different groups and the teaching staff all over the country had been requesting for this increase. And the ACT was leading in a series of campaigns, mass dialogues nation-wide.
Likewise ACT Party list Rep. Antonio Tinio informed too that he had followed this up by writing to Education Secretary Armin Luistro about the General Appropriations Act of 2012 which states that the clothing allowance can be increased to a maximum of P5,000.
In the process, the Department of Education (DepEd) said the clothing allowance will be increased to P5,000 from P4,000 in the previous years as stated in RA 10155 or the General Appropriations Act of 2012 signed by President Benigno Aquino III on December 15.
With this favorable development for the teachers' benefit, Ms. France Castro, Secretary-general of ACT announced, "Fellow teachers, let us claim and rejoice our victory."
"Again this is one concrete proof that our collective actions within and without the classrooms is a potent tool so that the government will act on our specific demands. Brace yourselves then for more campaigns to lead and launch," added Ms. Castro.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) considered the increase in clothing allowance, as “another victory for teachers nationwide”
Though the increase is only a small amount, but yet this could provide incentives to teachers to help uplift the quality of education in the country, as relayed by Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) spokesperson Emmalyn Policarpio.
