Aquino: 'War No Good'

"Breaking a cease-fire with the rebels and resuming outright war would not do anybody any good," PH President Benigno Simeon Aquino III said in news report.

"We should learn, nobody benefits in war," he said.

He brushed off those suggestions from government official to go against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and also in ordering an offensive against the rebel group.

Instead, Aquino III will not resort to an army assault on Muslim guerrillas who killed 19 army soldiers in fierce fighting in the south. He will proceed with peace talks with the rebels.

He wants to find out why it did happen with such heavy losses from a platoon of army special forces in the daylong fighting Tuesday on southern Basilan island.

Government peace negotiator said that it was accidental encounter and peace process would proceed.

Ever since the world began, killings, wars and even rumors of wars were abounding. Is there a possibility that we can achieve peace? When?

In 2006, Murray Smith, formerly international organiser for the Scottish Socialist Party chanced to visit Mindanao and posted her personal observation of the ongoing conflict there in "War and Peace in Mindanao" in International Viewpoint site. She observed that peace is not just the absence of war. She further pointed out a lasting peace means not only respecting the rights of the Moros and the Lumad, it also means putting an end to all the forms of poverty, inequality and injustice which breed violence.

Killing alone does not solve the social malady. The conflict is sectoral. Peace negotiation could pave the way to remedy all these things, though it takes time but it is possible.

Noynoy wants peace to take her course in resolving this conflict in Mindanao. He has the reason to do it. Let's give him the chance. Let's do our share and there are many ways of doing it, but not "a-tooth-for-a-tooth" means of resolving it.
