Agas-agas Bridge in Sogod Town |
The news said Lowela Aguero, 20, a native of Maasin City, Southern Leyte, invited her friends to visit Sogod town where the tallest bridge is located. It is the Agas-agas bridge, the 92-meter high, which is one of her favorite places to frequent with, and it's too dangerous to stay long or come near to its edge. Without any apparent reason, Lowela insisted to go near at it. Reprimanded by her friends not to, but Lowela insisted and pushed them away and just a wink of an eye, plunged her way off down to the bridge and killed herself.
What a pity! Why Lowela did that?
Now, finger pointing is here again! Who's to blame? Whose fault is that? What do you think?
Well, according to the people there, Lowela who hadn't been dead if proper precautions were present on the bridge. It's obvious that with such a very high bridge, no warning, no notice is posted!
How come? Imagine the bridge was passable for the public on August 8, 2009. That was 2 years ago. And it is a road link between the Visayas and Mindanao. And yet no precautionary measures ever established along the railings. No road signs whatsoever to caution or prevent the people, the commuters, or even the "usero" to be extra cautious or not to come close to the edge of the railings of the bridge for it is too dangerous. Or accident may happen. It's nonsense! The edge of the bridge is not properly secured!
Anyway only the parents, or close family members of Lowela have the know on her motive of killing herself. I'm sure they have already noticed the latest misbehavior of Lowela, her personal problem for that matter before her death. Be it her love life, her studies, or whatever.
Agas-agas is a dialect term for "flowing loose soil". This is a name given to the bridge which claims Lowela's life. Before Lowela's death, plans are already readied to make the bridge as a source of tourism revenue for the provincial government of Southern Leyte and the Southern Leyte Chamber of Commerce. The bridge will be the venue for an extreme sports like bungee jumping and zipline rapelling.

ReplyDeleteoh no... Hope the authorities will give solution to that. Don't let that another person will be a victim. Lowela is enough. Poor child... :(
ReplyDeleteoh that was so sad
ReplyDeleteHow tragic! I was really disturbed to read that she even "winked" at her friends before plunging to her death. What a way to go - with a wink.
ReplyDeleteAs for signs, I was reminded of Christopher Lao, the guy who "was not informed". There are some things that are obviously dangerous, like edges of bridges. But I guess we still need those signs, especially at night. But more than signs, there should be railings tall enough to discourage jumpers.
As for the bridge itself, I didn't know it even exists! I've only been in that part of the country once, and I only stayed at Maasin.
Just some people can never handle problems that they need to end up their life like that. It's sad that this young girl ended her life just like that. No more finger pointing now. Lowella made her choice, so be it.
ReplyDeleteThat's sad. How come after building a bridge they don't make sure that it's safe for everybody...they just place it there that's it! poor girl. May she rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad. She died at a very young age. Takot ako sa heights kaya I dunno if I can come closer sa edge ng bridge. Hahaha. I hope they will put proper precautions sa bridge to prevent it from happening again sa ibang tao.

ReplyDeleteWhat a senseless death ... such a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteThis is just sad. I hope she'd rest in peace. And hopefully, it'll be an eye opener to the officials.
ReplyDeleteMay she rest in peace... weird if suicidal nga to, she invited her friends to see her die?.. hope they do something about that place! this is so sad..
ReplyDeleteAnother waste of precious life. I don't think that the blame should go to the local government in this particular incident. It was her choice. With or without warning, the girl took the full responsibility of her action. However, they really have to put precautionary measures to ensure that no accident or unfavorable circumstances will happen in this bridge again.
ReplyDeleteOh Sir Gil, that's so tragic! I hope the government officials of Leyte would do something about the bridge asap. And may God give comfort to the girl's family for such a terrible loss.

ReplyDeleteSuicide/ i wonder what made him do it? anyway, the authorities will probably do something about the bridge now that somebody there.
ReplyDeletethis is a sad story but I just learned from you this.. we have a bridge like that? woot thanks for the knowledge
ReplyDeleteThis is sad! I don't really wanna read something like this cause it made me sad really :/
ReplyDeleteA bridge without railings? Naubusan ng funds kaya hindi na construct ang railings? That's an accident (and in this case, a suicide) waiting to happen! And the LGU had to wait this long, until someone died, in order to do something about it? People who want to hurt themselves will always find a way to do so. It's up for the authorities to instill the necessary safety measures in public infrastructure to prevent incidents like this from happening. Responsibility yan ng LGU.
ReplyDeletea sad story. I know her family was in shock upon hearing the news. It's so hard for parents or to close relatives to let go of a child especially through a tragic death. :( May she rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that she woul;d kill herself baka naman nadulas lang. No thanks to bunjee jumping there baka magpakita pa siya.
ReplyDeleteThis is very tragic! I went to that bridge almost 2 years ago and there is a motor patrol, I don't think the men guarding the bridge is to be blamed for her death. I think Lowela's responsible for her own death.
ReplyDeleteOMG, this is too sad. I pray for Lowela.
ReplyDeletethat is sad...
