Opening venues for children's voices to be heard (Day 39)*

One of the most precious gifts we could give to children is the venue where their voices and thoughts could be heard; a place where they are encouraged to value and practice freedom of speech in the pursuit of truth, justice and fairness. Putting a premium on the youth's right to self-expression and freedom of speech, the State provides Filipino children with such opportunity through RA 7079, or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.

Pursuant to this, DepEd continues to conduct the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) every year. This is an event where student journalists from elementary and secondary schools come together to showcase their skills in different facets of journalism. The NSPC aims to promote social consciousness, critical thinking, and responsible journalism among students.

Mrs. Cheryl Ducado-Villanueva, adviser, The AVS Courier tackled the various principles, techniques and technical skills a would-be photographer should be. Her lecture on photojournalism shed a great explanation why this is so.

She regarded life as a camera for what's important is being focused, the good times captured, and negatives are developed. If not satisfied, another shot is taken.

Honing Journalistic Skills Anew

I am now a senior citizen, but yet I am still sharpening my writing skills as far as journalism is concern. I have been in writing in the newspaper as a columnist, news reporter since 1991 as I joined with the Negros Daily Bulletin.

Now as a school principal of Cubay Elementary School, I am still making that skill as fresh as not only for myself, but also for also for my teachers, for our pupils.

One hundred sixty one teachers, both the elementary school and high school teachers hone and even update their journalistic skills in a 3-day regional training of trainers on campus journalism which started recently at Planta Hotel, Bacolod City.
