Discriminating Tastes: The Way to a Man’s Heart is Through His Stomach, But…

I am a man who has discriminating tastes. I don’t usually eat foods that are offered to me unless they are familiar to me. I am not an adventurous eater. I don’t care to eat what others are eating, even if it looks tasty. When I attend parties, I eat little – just enough to fill my tummy.

What my late mother always prepared for us, we never rejected it. We ate to our heart’s desire. In short, my mother was a good cook in her simple and humble way. Since I was the youngest of her six children, I always longed to go home early when I was away. I wanted to eat what she had prepared or cooked for the day. My mother was a vegan. Every week, she cooked us veggies with the best ingredients she had.

Though she wanted us to eat fresh leafy vegetables, my mother taught us not to stuff ourselves with food during the nighttime. It was not good for the tummy to eat at night, for we may suffer from indigestion. I didn’t know then if she was right, for I never disobeyed her. Today we eat veggies at any time of the day, even nighttime, and nothing happens to our tummies.

--------

July is usually observed as the nutrition month by every school in our division. This year's theme is "Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!" focuses on "the need for concerted multi-stakeholder actions to reduce hunger and malnutrition" as pointed out by the National Nutrition Council (NNC).

CES Nutrition Program and coronation 2013
This is stressed on NNC website, that reads in part: "The NM 2013 focus on hunger is part of the Philippines' commitment to the UN Millenium Development Goal particularly Goal 1 which is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, specifically to reduce by half of the underweight-for-age under-fives from 27.3% in 1990 to 13.7% in 2015 and reduce by half the percentage of households with inadequate dietary energy intake from 74.2% in 1993 to 37.1% in 2015. While malnutrition prevalence is declining, it is considered at a slow pace with the prevalence of underweight-for-age among preschoolers at 20.2% in 2011"

CES Spicy Kalabasa Okoy Menu

I have witnessed recently the on-the-spot cooking contest sponsored by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) recently as a part of its field day, showcasing organic agriculture and other projects of National Crop Research and Development Center here in La Carlota City.

I observed that this contest could be a good avenue and development for prospective professional cook. School pupils from Grades V and VI participated in this half-day cooking contest.

Actually, BPI Agricultureal Center Chief IV, Milagros B. Abaquita sent a communication inviting those Grade V and VI pupils of five selected elementary schools within the vicinity of the center and our school, Cubay Elem. School was one of the participating schools. The other schools were Nagasi ES, Ferlou ES, Haguimit ES, and La Granja.

Panie Birthday Wish

The other day, one of our six grandchildren, Stephanie Gyn, fondly known to us as Panie, celebrated her 6th birthday. She had it in a simple, austere celebration with homemade foods prepared by her mama An An.

Panie 6th Birthday
Panie, the birthday girl
Panie is a smart, a good dancer and talented kid. Her happy family is very proud of her.

Before her birthday, Panie asked her parents to prepare something for her to make it more sumptuous and memorable with balloons and other birthday decors.

Gigi, her aunt was kidding her and asked her: "What about if there could be no birthday party, for your parents don't have money yet? Payday is too far."

"Ti indi lang ako anay mag-six years old eh. Kun  wala sang handa o birthday party eh," (I wouldn't be turning 6 years old then if there's no celebration or birthday party.) replied Panie.

The fair also aims to keep in contact with the Negrense community in Manila that there is something for them to be proud of and to celebrate what Negros can offer to the world.

As per record, the fair has gained wide acceptance by a dramatic increased sales every year and the influx of visitors.

So far, the ANP, as one of the oldest and largest groups of micro and small entrepreneurs in the Western Visayas  has accessed worldwide markets in the United States, Europe, Japan, Africa, the Middle East, Scandinavian countries and Singapore.

Currently the ANP has ninety-six (96) member producers.

The ANP humble beginning was traced back sometime in 1980's when 14 Negrense housewives and a gentleman organized themselves to form an association of Negros producers of locally made products to properly address the ill effects of sugar crisis that greatly affected the Negros economy for that period of time, and 5 years later conducted  the first trade fair in Manila with the hope to economically survive the said sugar crisis.

Well for such 26 years of business trade fair, the ANP products have gained people's acceptance not only from their fellow Filipinos but from the foreigners as well.
