The Day We Reached One Million

The Day We Reached One Million (Day 38)

by Rey Laguda

Jun 17 will turn out to be one of my most memorable days in DepEd. At 11:17 am yesterday, our Learner Information System (LIS) registered a million Gr 11 students as enrolled by private and public schools including SUC/LUCs.

What does that mean? It means many things, like a mixed drink can be many concoctions. It means six years of hard work and perseverance has turned a dream into a reality. It means that all the hours put by LIS developers, teachers and staff who encode learners, division and regional staff who monitor schools, central office people who help clean up the database and address concerns - are all accounted for. It means one million learners are in school and have a wonderful opportunity to have a better life through education. It means an additional 1% of our population are in school. It means that we now have an online registry of 25 million students (25% of our population) with figures shown in real time. It means that what may have sounded insurmountable was achieved through a massive collective effort of all stakeholders. It means that miracles do happen. It means that the elephant has danced tinikling.

Forgive me for the reference but this is almost like Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors for this year's NBA season. So many records were broken. So many firsts.

The work continues and we know that the number will continue to rise in the coming days. So I want to take a moment to pause, breathe in and out, give praise and give thanks. Cheers...
