Coming together and providing feasible solutions (Day 27)

Schools have their own unique challenges and varying contexts that require attention. Solutions are not the same for all and it is important to allow schools and its personnel to innovate and create solutions. This is the essence of DepEd's School Based Management (SBM). Part of the efforts to push this principle is the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and the School Report Card (SRC). It is an alphabet soup of acronyms but these two are actually a major push for transparency, engagement, and empowerment. These tools help push the process of shared governance.

Through the School Report Card, the public can see and understand the current status and performance of the school. Take a look at any public school, and you will see a bulletin board where you can take a look at the condition and improvement of the school. While promoting transparency, SRC also aims to urge more stakeholders in taking an active part in education by giving them the right information and hopefully, at the right time. By instituting this in the form of policy, the public has the right to demand for such information and expect schools to have such disclosures. Transparency is even more important as we have been moving towards increasing school budgets.

Using the Continuous Improvement methodology (Assess, Analyze, Act), SIP provides schools with a systematic and evidence-based approach to problem-solving that will benefit the learners. It is a tool that helps schools plan effectively and lay out specific interventions that could improve the delivery of basic education. SIP encourages active engagement of school heads, teachers, personnel, and external stakeholders in identifying school concerns and issues and coming up with appropriate and strategic solutions that could improve the school’s performance. This is how DepEd works—by coming together, engaging its schools and stakeholders, analyzing the situation, and coming up with feasible and doable solutions—for the Filipino learner.
