Investing in Offices

Investing in Offices (Day 17)

by Rey Laguda

(This is the 17th day of 50-day journey of DepEd Undersecretary Rey Laguda as being serialized here with his permission, culled from his Facebook account - Blogger/owner)

The Department of Education (DepEd), being the biggest national government agency in terms of people, budget and geographic scope, needs to be a bureaucracy that works. Hierarchy and structure is a necessity considering the multiple programs that we implement in addition to participation in multi-agency efforts.

As such, DepEd is organized in terms of schools, division offices and regional offices. There are now 218 division offices each headed by a schools division superintendent and 18 regional offices each headed by a regional director. This includes 22 newly created division offices and one regional office.

As a frontline agency, it is important that our offices are able to function properly and effectively represent national government. It was not enough to just fix the schools and build classrooms. We had some offices that were located inside school premises and some renting office space. So a program of new construction, repair and rehabilitation was undertaken for the division and regional offices. Repair works were also made for Regional Education Learning Centers that serve as training venues for teachers and other personnel. To date, a more than P1.5 billion has been allocated for these construction and rehabilitation over that last six years for almost all division offices including the creation of offices for new divisions.

We hope that these offices serve as symbols of true service and commitment to our learners and our people.
