Eco-Friendly School Artist's Concept
Iliranan Elementary School of the division of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, PH was recently adjudged as the top winner in the 2011 Most Sustainable and Eco-Friendly School, Elementary Schools category in a national contest conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Iliranan Elementary School was one of the three city's entries in the regional selection/search and made it to the top. While the other two entries which did not win were Quezon Elementary School and Julio Ledesma National High School.

IE School received a plaque and certificate of recognition as first place winner, P50,000 cash and a bag of Information and Educational materials for the school.

This simple elementary school is located in an outlying, upland Barangay Codcod. This could be reached by a motorbike, which is locally known as habal-habal with a minimum of 4 passengers. Usually it is an-hour travel from San Carlos City proper.

This nationwide search is a direct response to Republic Act No. 9512 also known as the Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008.

The contest aims to highlight the achievement of schools that are committed in implementing various environmental programs and to encourage schools and academic institutions become more actively involved in environmental issues at a practical and local level.

It is open to all elementary, high school and tertiary school levels, both public and private.

Twelve teachers from Iliranan Elementary School with Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Alan Yap, District Supervisor Marilyn Cabatuan, Marietta Lomocso of San Carlos City Solid Waste Management Office, and San Carlos City Mayor Gerardo Valmayor Jr. attended the awarding ceremonies at SM North Edsa, in November 16, 2011.

Likewise Mildred Garay, DepEd Regional Director for Region 6  and Amy Guillergan of Environment Management Bureau 6 witnessed the awarding ceremonies.
