Congratz Azkals! They went to history today after they beat the Sri Lanka Brave Reds, 4-0 in the second leg of their Round 1 World Cup qualifier at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, Manila, Philippines where 12,000 spectators of mixed feelings.

Playing in your home town or country is an edge. Look at the victorious Azkals. They live in the Philippines. Of course, they are used to the climatic condition of the country.  That's why, in spite of the heavy downpour in the first half, they fixed the tie on an aggregate of 5-1 and made history on several counts, the news said.

They made history of the most "firsts" in football game: first-ever victory in World Cup qualifying matches, first time the Philippines scored more than one goal in a WC qualifying match, and first to advance to the second round of the WC qualifiers.

Sri Lankan coach Jang Jung declared, "The Philippines was the better team TODAY." (Emphasis is supplied.) Meaning, Sri Lankan football players could still play better than Azkals in forthcoming games, world tourney in football! That's true. In earlier game, Sri Lanka had many chances to win the game. But they couldn't get a "clear shot."

As coach Michael Weiss puts it Sri Lanka's pitches are affected by "irregular conditions."

I'm not superstitious, but this situation really works. The Azkals are in good position or comfortable since this is their home country where the game was played. That's an advantage. Imagine out of more than 10,000 spectators, most are Filipinos to cheer them up, to sympathize with them, and half of them brave the heavy rains.

Anyway, two-thumbs up for the Azkals. Viva Philippine Azkals!

N. B.:The Azkals will playing against Kuwait for their second-round two-leg tie. They will play against Kuwait in the first leg on July 23 in Kuwait and the second in Manila in July 28. Coach Michael Weiss said their preparation will be a rigid one for they will be playing against a very tough opponent for the national side which is Kuwait that ranks 103 in the world.
