July 8 - National Allergy Day in the PHL

Four years ago today the then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed the Presidential Proclamation No. 1313 declaring July 8 as National Allergy Day "to strengthen public awareness on the growing problem of allergies among Filipino children."

An allergy is a medical condition involving the immune system’s reaction to a foreign substance known as an allergen. This could be an animal hair, a certain medicine, dust, food, insect bite, mold, plant, pollen, virus, or bacteria.

Symptoms of allergy are classified as mild, moderate, and severe.

Mild allergy symptoms include rash, itchiness, watery eyes, face bumps, sneezing, congestion. Moderate allergy reactions include itchiness spreading to other parts of the body and difficulty in breathing. Severe allergy symptoms or anaphylaxis is a life-threatening emergency in which the body’s response to the allergen is sudden and affects the whole body.

Allergy symptoms can make one’s life miserable so it is important to know what causes the allergy symptoms. There is no cure for allergies but they can be managed successfully through medication and allergy shots. Drinking plenty of water and fruit juices (except citrus) and eating vegetables (except corn and tomatoes), brown rice, white fish, almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds can eliminate some allergies.

Avoiding stressful situations and food additives can also reduce allergies. And, of course, keeping the immune system healthy through the help of vitamins such as Vitamins C, A, E, and zinc will definitely help prevent having allergies.
